GP Shortage Meeting
Angela Aldred, Workforce Coordinator 21 December 07
Last Monday evening (10 Dec) 11 general practitioners attended the second BDDGP workforce planning meeting this year.
Ballarat City Council representatives Fiona Davey, Manager of the Economic Development Unit and George Sossi, General Manager, Marketing and Business Development, presented information on how the council has been engaged in attracting business to Ballarat. The council wishes to work with the Division on recruitment of general practictioners to Ballarat, promoting the liveability of Ballarat to prospective candidates and their families.
Andrew McPherson advised that a consultant has been engaged by General Practice Victoria to work with all divisions to coordinate responses to issues related to the planned increased numbers of medical training places. A group of local general practitioners have agreed to work as a focus group with the Division and GPV.
Further discussion concentrated on methods of increasing the retention of medical professionals in the region: undergraduate students, interns, hospital doctors and GP registrars.
