Practice Nurse Increase in Ballarat
Helen Threlfall, GPV 14 December 07
I wish to congratulate BDDGP on achieving a 21% increase in the number of GP Nurses employed across the division area.
The increase in nurse numbers is likely to have been in response to the support by the division, and the opportunities for nurses to use the CDM items and to contribute to the 45-49 Health Check, both of which increase the viability of employing practice nurses.
Highlights from the Division's Nursing in General Practice (NiGP) program include;
- 8 Division-run educational events
- embedding a Practice Nurse component across 7 programs
- establishing 2 GP Nurse Advisors for the immunisation program
- offering orientation and mentoring to newly employed nurses within the division area
- approaching all practices that do not currently employ a nurse to discuss practice nurse employment
- six General Practices participating in ACU clinical placement of 3rd year nursing students
Without the support of Michelle MacGillivray and BDDGP, the NiGP program would not have experienced the level of success that it has.
